ABOUT THIS SILICA AWARENESS TRAINING COURSE
Nationally Accredited Silica Awareness Training Course: CPCSIL3001 – Work with products and materials containing crystalline silica
Welcome to our comprehensive course on crystalline silica safety. This course is meticulously designed to deepen your understanding and awareness of the critical safety aspects related to Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS), using tangible industry examples. Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) dust is not just hazardous but can lead to severe health issues, including silicosis, a life-threatening lung disease.
This course is specifically crafted for workers, supervisors, and managers who may encounter Respirable Crystalline Silica professionally. It is a vital educational tool for those aiming to mitigate workplace risks associated with silica dust exposure and is a legal imperative for business owners.
Crystalline silica is present in many materials and products used in the construction industry. While crystalline silica is harmless when contained within an undisturbed product, it becomes hazardous when the product is processed, such as during installation, cutting, shaping, or grinding, releasing dust that contains respirable crystalline silica particles. This dust poses a significant health risk. We aim to educate workers and the industry on safe handling practices for these materials, aiming to inform rather than alarm.
We provide participants with the skills, knowledge, and awareness needed to identify potential exposure sources, understand associated health risks, and recognise the hazards of improper handling. In addition, we emphasise preventative strategies to minimise or eliminate exposure in alignment with workplace safety standards.
This silica awareness course is Nationally Accredited and has been identified as an approved training course by SafeWork NSW, QLD, and SA. While the state of Victoria has not mandated a specific course, health and safety regulations do stated that employers must provide information, instruction and training to their workers regarding exposure to silica.
NOTE: This course is unsuitable for those working in the ACT. The health and safety regulators in the ACT have mandated a silica awareness course created and controlled by the CFMUE.

UNITS OF COMPETENCE (SUBJECTS) & COURSE DURATION
CPCSIL3001 – WORK WITH PRODUCTS AND MATERIALS CONTAINING CRYSTALLINE SILICA
STUDENT INVESTMENT (Duration): 4.5 hours online / face-to-face* + On-Site Workplace Support Evidence**
UNIT OVERVIEW
This course is specifically designed for the construction industry, equipping participants with essential skills, knowledge, and awareness to:
- Differentiate between Crystalline Silica and Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS).
- Identify products and materials that contain crystalline silica.
- Understand and apply risk mitigation strategies to minimize exposure to RCS dust in the workplace.
- Fit test, clean, and maintain their RPE
Participants will gain insight into the health risks associated with RCS and learn about hazards linked to improper handling. The course also emphasises preventive strategies that align with workplace policies, procedures, and safety standards to minimise or eliminate exposure.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and will have the opportunity to inspect, fit-test, clean, and maintain their equipment—skills that can be readily applied in their everyday tasks.
To streamline the practical component, we recognise that participants are qualified tradespeople actively working in the construction industry. Our team collaborates with participants’ site supervisors, managers, or Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) teams to gather supporting evidence of their competencies with crystalline silica materials, eliminating the need for additional time away from work.
*The actual duration of the online (or in-class face-to-face) component may vary based on class discussions, participant numbers, and previous experience with the subject matter. We estimate that the theory component will take approximately 4 hours to complete; however, we ask all students to allow up to 4.5 hours in their schedules to account for any additional discussion or questions.
**The time needed to complete the on-site practical activities and assessments at your workplace will depend on the specific tasks scheduled for you. Intelligent Training Solutions will coordinate with your employer to collect supporting evidence—such as photos, videos, or third-party reports—demonstrating your safe handling of products or materials containing crystalline silica. This evidence will include tasks involving the processing of materials that contain crystalline silica, ensuring alignment with course requirements and industry safety standards.
