ABOUT THIS SILICA AWARENESS TRAINING COURSE
WorkSafe Approved: Nationally Accredited Silica Awareness Training Course: CPCSIL3001 – Work with products and materials containing crystalline silica
Welcome to our course on crystalline silica safety. Using tangible industry examples, this course is meticulously designed to deepen your understanding and awareness of the critical safety aspects related to Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS). Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) dust is hazardous and can lead to severe health issues, including silicosis, a life-threatening lung disease.
This course is crafted explicitly for workers, supervisors, and managers who may encounter Respirable Crystalline Silica within their job functions. It is a vital educational tool for those aiming to mitigate workplace risks associated with silica dust exposure and is a legal imperative for business owners.
Crystalline silica is present in many materials and products used in the construction industry. While crystalline silica is harmless when contained within an undisturbed product, it becomes hazardous when it is processed, such as during installation, cutting, shaping, or grinding, releasing dust containing respirable crystalline silica particles. This dust poses a health risk.
Through this course, we aim to inform people rather than alarm them.
This course will provide participants with the skills, knowledge, and awareness needed to identify potential exposure sources, understand associated health risks, and recognise the hazards of improper handling. In addition, we emphasise preventative strategies to minimise or eliminate exposure in alignment with workplace safety standards.
This silica awareness course is Nationally Accredited and has been identified as an approved training course by SafeWork NSW, QLD, and SA. While the state of Victoria has not mandated a specific course, health and safety regulations do stated that employers must provide information, instruction and training to their workers regarding exposure to silica.
NOTE: This course is unsuitable for those working in the ACT. The health and safety regulators in the ACT have mandated a silica awareness course created and controlled by the CFMUE.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
Here are a few of our most frequently asked questions on this course; please click on any questions below to expand the content.
WHAT IS INVOLVED WITH WORKPLACE OBSERVATIONS?
What Is Involved with Workplace Observations?
Our course assessors and support team will collaborate with your workplace manager, supervisor, or Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team to gather the practical observations required to demonstrate competence for this unit.
This process is facilitated through the Learner Portal, where students can send an online third-party observational report to their workplace manager, supervisor, or HSE team member. This report, designed by our team, includes a checklist of observable criteria that must be reviewed and completed by the designated workplace representative.
In addition to completing the checklist, the workplace manager, supervisor, or HSE team member will need to provide photographic (or video) evidence of two key activities:
- A Mask Fitment Test (Positive and Negative Pressure Test)
- A Work Task Activity (working with a product or material that contains crystalline silica)
These photos (or videos) can be easily uploaded through the online third-party observational report, keeping the process streamlined and straightforward.
Our goal is to ensure a smooth and efficient workplace observation process while maintaining the integrity and quality of the assessment.
WHAT IF I AM NOT CONFIDENT USING A COMPUTER OR I DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A COMPUTER OR THE INTERNET?
Intelligent Training Solutions strongly recommends contacting our office before enrolling in this course for those who are not confident with a computer. This way, our trainers and support team can discuss the online requirements with you, potentially finding a way to assist you throughout your course.

Students have 30 days from the date of enrolment to complete the learning materials (video sessions) and workplace observations.
WHAT SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE DURING THE COURSE?
Students and workplace representatives are provided support through our student support team, available Monday to Friday, 8.45 am to 4.45 pm.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL AN ASSESSMENT?
Assessment Attempts
Students are allowed two attempts to successfully complete their theory assessment, known as the online quiz.
For the practical observations, which are conducted through a third-party observational report, students also have two opportunities to demonstrate competence. However, if a second attempt is required, students must first consult with their trainer to discuss their previous performance and receive guidance before proceeding.
This process ensures that students have the support they need to succeed while maintaining the integrity of the assessment.
CAN I EXTEND MY ACCESS TO THE LEARNER PORTAL?
Yes, you can request an extension to your Learner Portal access for a maximum of 30 days. If you require additional time, please contact our support team to discuss your extension request and any associated requirements.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I CHANGE JOBS DURING THE COURSE?

If you change jobs before completing the course, you can still proceed with the course. Either your previous employer or your new employer can perform the required workplace observations for you. Simply ensure that the individual conducting the observations meets the criteria outlined in the course guidelines (e.g., a supervisor, manager, or HSE team member).
If you have any concerns about transitioning your practical assessments, our team is here to assist you.
CAN I COMPLETE THIS COURSE IF I DON'T HAVE A WORKPLACE MANAGER OR HSE TEAM?
Yes, but you will need someone within your workplace who is qualified and in a position to assess your skills and abilities when working with products or materials containing crystalline silica. This person could be a site supervisor, company owner, health and safety representative, or another suitable individual who meets the following criteria:
- Is qualified in the industry.
